The study summarizes and reviews the detailed field and geochemical data of the Tipasjärvi–Kuhmo–Suomussalmi greenstone complex collected during the regional geological mapping and ore exploration programme of the GTK and the Department of Geology, University of Turku. The main emphasis of the study is on the interpretation of the data in terms of stratigraphy and reconstruction of the Archaean evolution of the greenstone belts. The authors conclude that the greenstone belts evolved in an intra-continental rift system since this geotectonic model best satisfies the overall of the stratigraphic context, together with lithological, volcanological, structural, as well as major, trace element, and isotope geochemical data.

Gold prospectivity of Finland

This report presents results of a country-wide assessment of gold prospectivity in Finland. The assessment is based on a workshop and field trip in May 2006, but has been updated with the most recent literature on gold metallogeny and local exploration. Specific modelling criteria are suggested for the main types of gold mineralisation detected and for the main gold belts of the country. The results of the work are expected to benefit exploration both in Finland and globally in other Precambrian shield areas.

Geochemical Atlas of Northern Europe

For the Geochemical Atlas of Northern Europe, primary data from 28 (8 international and 20 national) regional geochemical mapping projects carried out in 1980−2005 were merged into one database. In the first phase, a meta-database including all relevant information about the projects was compiled. The projects covered NW Russia, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.

The Atlas includes 296 geochemical maps showing the spatial distribution of a wide range of elements, their associations, and different combinations of anomalous geochemical fields. Additionally, accessory maps illustrating natural conditions and features of human activity in Northern Europe were prepared.

Mine Closure Handbook available in English

The handbook is targeted at mine operators, public agencies, and third-party interest groups dealing with closure planning in the context of EU legislation and regulations. The handbook reviews regulatory requirements and trends, avoidance of potential negative impacts, risk management strategies, bonding and other economic considerations, best practices, as well as instructions on preparing a closure plan, implementation of closure, and post-closure issues.

The handbook is issued by the Green Net Mining (GNM) Group, a joint cooperation of GTK, VTT, Outokumpu Oyj, Jaakko Pöyry Infra and Destia Oy.
